What is a Young Adult?
Within libraries, the terms young adult and teen are usually used interchangeably. However, every library defines young adult ages and grade levels differently. Here at the Upper Dublin Public Library, we define young adult as anyone in grades six through twelve. While we realize that most sixth and seventh graders are not yet "teens," we recognize that children in these grade levels often gravitate towards teen library programs and collection materials. Parents and caregivers will want to determine for themselves whether an item in our Young Adult Collection is appropriate based on the individual maturity level of their child.
How can I determine if a book is appropriate for my age?
The best way is to randomly flip through the book and look for any material that "jumps out at you." Also, opening the book at random and reading a few pages should give you a good flavor for the book as well as its appropriateness. If you would like one-on-one help selecting materials, please ask for help from our librarians. The Young Adult Librarian, the Head of Youth Services, or one of our Reference Librarians is usually available to assist you. However, keep in mind that ultimately parents and caregivers will want to determine for themselves whether an item in our Young Adult Collection is appropriate based on the individual maturity level of their child as well as various parenting decisions.
How does the Young Adult Librarian choose items for the library's Young Adult Collection?
Favorable professional reviews in VOYA (Voice of Youth Advocates), School Library Journal, ALA Booklist, and The Horn Book often determine whether a book, movie, music CD, or video game is purchased and added to our Young Adult Collection. However, these reviews, the same ones found under "Editorial Reviews" when purchasing items online through Amazon or Barnes and Noble, are only one part of the equation. Popularity of an item is equally important. Therefore, having bestsellers as part of the Young Adult Collection also is paramount. For more information please read the Upper Dublin Public Library's Materials Selection & Collection Development Policy.
How can I decide what to read next?
Finding a book is like finding a friend. Sometimes, you pick up a book and from the first page, you know it's right. Other times, you may start a book and the feeling isn't quite perfect. When this happens, you might want to keep with it for a few chapters. Sometimes, it just takes a little longer to get in sync with what you're reading. Then, there times when you start a book and it just isn't for you. In times such as these, it's okay to say "this isn't for me." Of course, if it's a book for a school assignment, you are going to have finish! But, for your own leisure reading, know that it is okay to walk away and try another book. Check out our Teen Book, Movie, Music & Video Game Lists page for lists to help you select your next read.
